If you or your child were born in Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao, or Taiwan — or are of Chinese descent — the Consulate asks for extra documents on top of the standard China visa requirements. Find your situation below.
A foreign-born child of Chinese descent must include a photocopy of the child's most recent Chinese visa sticker with the application. If that visa is in an older passport, also include a photocopy of that passport's name page along with the visa page.
If this is the child's first application, or no copy of a previous Chinese visa is available, include instead: a photocopy of the child's birth certificate, plus a photocopy of the parents' foreign passport or foreign permanent-resident ID (for example, a U.S. passport or U.S. green card). The Chinese Consulate may request additional paperwork.
First-time applicants born in Mainland China must also provide their most recent original Chinese passport, a photocopy of the U.S. Naturalization Certificate, and a photocopy of the U.S. Permanent Resident Card.
If the name on your current passport differs from the name in your previous Chinese visa, include a photocopy of the name-change court order as well. If your Chinese passport expired before your naturalization date, please email us at service@visarite.net for instructions before applying.
First-time applicants born in Hong Kong or Macao must also provide their previous original Hong Kong or Macao passport (or government-issued ID), together with the Confirmation of Nationality Change Declaration issued by the SAR government. If your current name differs from the name on your birth certificate, ID, or old passport, include your name-change documents.
First-time applicants born in Taiwan must also provide their previous original Taiwan passport or a government-issued ID from Taiwan. If your current name differs from the name on your birth certificate, ID, or old passport, include your name-change documents.
Applicants born in Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao, or Taiwan who received a China visa before, in a different passport, must submit both that previous passport and the new passport with the application. If your earlier visa was an old-style stamp rather than a visa sticker, or the previous passport is no longer available, follow the first-time requirements for your place of birth above instead.
Applicants born in Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao, or Taiwan must enter their name in Chinese characters and their city of birth on the China visa application form (sections 1.2 and 1.8).
If you were born in Taiwan, make sure section 1.7 shows "China" (not "ROC" or "Taiwan") and section 1.8 shows "Taiwan, China" (not "ROC" or "Taiwan"). Need help with the form? See our COVA form guide.
First-time applicants who were adopted from China must provide their original Chinese passport, a photocopy of the adoption certificate, and a photocopy of the U.S. Naturalization Certificate. If the name on the U.S. passport differs from the name on the adoption certificate, include a photocopy of the name-change court order as well.
If one of the child's parents was a Chinese citizen who had not yet obtained U.S. permanent residence when the child was born, Chinese law considers the child a Chinese citizen — "any person born to a Chinese national is a Chinese national and shall have Chinese nationality." In that case, the child cannot receive a China visa and must apply for a China Travel Document instead. Contact us if you're unsure which applies to your child.
Gather the documents for your situation above along with the standard requirements for your visa type, then start a Service Request — we'll pre-check everything before it goes to the Consulate.
