Which form you need depends on who issued your document — a state authority or the federal government. Pick the one that matches below.
For documents issued or notarized within a U.S. state, certified through that state's Secretary of State. Typical documents include:
| Diploma or transcript | Notarized school documents |
| Vital record | Birth, marriage, death certificate |
| State background check | State or local police record |
| Commercial document | Certificate of good standing, corporate documents |
| Other document | Court order, power of attorney, and more |
All documents in one request must be from the same state. If your documents are from different states, submit a separate request for each state.
Start a State-Level RequestFor documents issued by a U.S. federal agency, certified through the U.S. Department of State in Washington, DC. Typical documents include:
| FBI background check | FBI Identity History Summary |
| Other federal documents | USDA/FDA certificates, IRS documents, federal court documents, and more |
FBI reports don't need notarization — they're apostilled directly at the federal level.
Start a Federal-Level RequestA quick rule of thumb: if a state office, town clerk, school, or notary produced your document, it's state-level. If a federal agency like the FBI produced it, it's federal. You can also read the apostille overview, the no criminal record guide, or the FBI check guide — or just ask us.
